OSCEOLA COUNTY — To the naked eye, it might look like a typical Mecosta Osceola Transit Authority bus. But, what’s on the inside is a Halloween-like surprise to greet riders as they board.

Last year, MOTA planned to host a Trunk-or-Treat event for Halloween, and stocked up on decorations. Unfortunately, COVID-19 concerns caused the bus transit to cancel its plans.

However, this year, the MOTA staff decided to take those decorations and add a bit of friendly spookiness to the inside of one bus, said Staci Hitts, operations supervisor of MOTA.

“We wanted to get more involved during different holidays and have getting on the bus more fun for our riders,” Hitts said.

The decorated bus, referred to as the Spooky Bus, dons hanging paper machete pumpkins, a few cobwebs, a life-sized scarecrow — be careful, it does move — and more. The Spooky Bus is currently in operation and will be throughout the month — especially Oct. 30, Hitts noted.

MOTA operates six days a week in Osceola and Mecosta counties. Hours of operation are 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays; and closed Sundays.

If the response remains positive, MOTA will consider decorating busses for other holidays in the future, Hitts said.

For those who may be curious, the Spooky Bus is also known as Bus No. 87.

MOTA is located at 18710 18 Mile Road in Big Rapids and can be reached at 231-796-4896.
