EVART — Smith Lumber Co. in Evart has a long history, dating back more than 100 years to its original establishment known as Shore Lumber, but it continues to serve the needs of residents near and far.

The business not only carries a variety of lumber, but also offers hardware, home repair and renovation products, tools, cleaning supplies and even some animal feed. It has served local residents as well as customers from across the region and beyond.

While owner Alan Salinas was born and raised in Detroit, his wife and co-owner, RaeMarie, and his parents are from the Evart area. The couple, who also farm on the side, have two children and one grandchild.

Alan has a history of being handy and said he will gladly help anyone who needs tips or assistance with a project. For the future, he wants to keep looking for unique things to bring into the business that will serve the community’s needs.

HERALD REVIEW: Give a brief explanation of what your business does or specializes in.

SALINAS: We’re a lumber yard and hardware business catering to contractors and homeowners for do-it-yourself projects or building houses.

How did you come to establish your business?

SALINAS: It was established in approximately 1900 by one of the original people here in Evart years ago and it was first called Shore Lumber. Then it switched over in about 1950 to Smith Lumber and then in 2000 I purchased the company from the Smiths. We’ve been here ever since and kept the Smith Lumber name.

What sets you apart from other similar businesses?

SALINAS: We strive to get the product to the people when they need it and to be friendly. No project is too small, we help them with all kinds of challenges. If they need something special ordered, we’re not too good to say no. I’ll research anything or my guys will.

How do you give back to the community?

SALINAS: I support the fairs and there are a lot of people that come in and need donations for this charity or that charity and we’re more than willing to help out.

What is a trend you’ve been seeing with your company or customers?

SALINAS: There is a lot of remodeling going on right now. Everybody is trying to fix up what they have and to maintain it.

What is the best and worst part of being in the business you’re in?

SALINAS: The best part is just the customers and finding out what their projects are. You meet a lot of new people in the area that you may not have realized who they were. They could be your neighbors that aren’t too far from you. I really don’t say there’s a worst part to the business. I just enjoy meeting new people and helping them get their projects completed.

Any last comments?

SALINAS: We’re here to serve and we’re willing to bend over backwards to help the people out there.
