EVART — Evart’s boys track team has usually scored plenty of points in the past and this season is not expected to be any different.

Junior distance runner Nathan Woods is looking to have another solid year for the Wildcats. It’s his third year of Evart track.

“Winning the region is always fun,” Woods said of this team. “We’ve won it both my years. We’ve also won conference.”

As for this year, “we’re looking pretty good for the region,” he added. “Conference is going to be tough. We’ve got McBain and Manton.”

His best event has been the 3,200-meter run. He qualified in that event for the state finals last season and took 22nd in 10 minutes, 43.17 seconds. He was first in a pair of invitationals. He has a personal record of 10:39 in that event.

“I hope to be under 10 minutes this year, maybe in the 9:50s,” he said.

He’s hoping to be in the 4:30s in the 1,600-meter run, his second best event. Woods had a 4:46.2 last season for his current personal record.

He took first place in the 800 meters (2:14.67) and first in the 1,600 meters (4:54.98) against Harrison on April 11. He was also on the first-place 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams.

By the end of May wouldn’t be a bad time, Woods acknowledges, for having his best performances of the season.

Weather permitting, the Wildcats will be at Lakeview on Friday.
