Last Saturday I went fishing with a friend on Lake Missaukee. It was a beautiful day and I was looking forward to it. We put the boat in the water and began looking for some blue gill beds. We took the boat along the area they bed up and saw nothing. Apparently we were a bit early. But we didn’t give up fishing. We headed out a bit and drifted along with our lines in the water. It was slow, but on occasion we would pull up a blue gill, a sunfish or a small bass. We drifted that section several times with only those few hits. But we didn’t give up. We headed to another part of the lake and looked for some blue gill beds there. Still nothing. But we didn’t give up. We went into a cove and looked some more. You guessed it – nothing. But we didn’t give up. We went into a different section of the lake (I would tell you, but you’ll have to figure that out yourself). Here, we hit on fish that were just asking to get in the boat. There were nice-sized sunfish and blue gill and some bass. I literally had occasions I would put my line in the water and a fish would immediately be on the hook! It was a great time that I hope to repeat again really soon. But to get to that point, we couldn’t give up. The reward came through perseverance. James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God promised to those who love Him.” This is not promised merely to those who suffer. Many suffer. It is promised to those who persevere through the suffering. There were perhaps many last Saturday not catching fish, but only those who stuck it out and persevered actually reaped the reward. If we continue to follow God, despite the suffering and trials then there will be a reward at the end. The Bible gives us hope and those who have gone on before – the prophets of old – give us hope. There IS a reward – if we will only persevere for a short time more.
