I was watching Criminal Minds the other day. After searching for an unknown subject that had been killing for 10 years, one of the agents made this statement: “The entire time I’ve been with the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) working almost non-stop, having no real life, these brothers have been out here killing 89 people and we didn’t even know about it … How many others are out there hunting and killing. The thing is no matter what we do, no matter how hard we work, no matter how good we are at what we do, this is never going to end.” If you’ve attempted to help others or simply do good yourself for very long, you know that it can become tiring. You try and help those who are financially struggling, but see even more people who are down and out. You attempt to rescue those bound by addiction, yet you see an endless line of those chained to their passions. You want to save those who are depressed, abused and suffering, but find yourself sinking into deep depression thinking of the many you cannot rescue. It can become quite disheartening. The fact is that “no matter what you do, how hard you work and no matter how good you are at what you do,” evil and suffering are never going to end. Until Christ returns, they will always be around. God knew that we would get tired. In Galatians Paul tells us to “restore those who are caught in a sin” and to “carry each other’s burdens.” But there are many who are caught in sin and many burdens to carry. So He goes on to say, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9-10). We can’t give up. A harvest is coming. There will be benefits to our efforts. We must also remember that “we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). God prepared you to do good works for His glory. You are specially made to help others. God designed you just for that purpose. But not you alone. Each member of the body of Christ plays a part — some huge and public, others smaller and private. But each part is to do good. Each part is to press forward. I have witnessed many in our community doing good — helping those who have been through fires, giving to those who struggled financially, putting on roofs, tutoring students, providing food, sacrificing time, re-establishing lives, freeing from addiction and guiding those few care about at all. Don’t become discouraged. You are not alone in this effort to do good. I encourage you today as Paul did the churches in His day, “as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (Philippians 6:10).
