Reed City GFWC restarting Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner

REED CITY — The Reed City General Federation of Womens Club is hoping to restart an annual favorite to the area: the Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner.

The dinner is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Reed City High School cafetorium. This year’s dinner will be catered by Pere Marquette Catering.

Shelly Scharlow, GFWC chair for organizing the dinner, said the first dinner to honor area seniors took place around 30 years ago, with the Jaycees hosting the reservation-only meal. The meal was a catered dinner with entertainment and good fellowship.

When the Jaycees dissolved, Scharlow and her husband helped keep the meal going for years, up until the time their eldest daughter became ill with cancer and they were unable to do so.

Scharlow said now is a great time to restart the dinner again.

“Many of us have that special senior in our lives or ourselves in the upcoming years, who would like a nice catered meal, entertainment and good fellowship at Christmastime,” she said. Reservations for this event should be made before Thursday, Dec. 1. Only 200 reservations will be taken, Scharlow said.

To make a reservation, call (231) 832-3178. Business and organizations wishing to assist the GFWC in offsetting the costs of the dinner, call the same phone number.
