As I write this article, my eyes are glued to the news and weather forecasts.  It’s not that I’m a news junkie.  In fact, I don’t normally watch news broadcasts.  But tonight is different.  Tonight I have a special interest.  I’m watching as Hurricane Sandy begins to surge onto the Delaware shore.  I’m curious to see if the predicted 80 mile per hour gusts of wind, 8 foot swells and up to 10 days of power outages will become reality and how much damage they will do.

No, I don’t have a compulsive desire to view destruction.  I simply have an interest in what is happening in the place I grew up.  You see, I’m from Delaware so my parents, brother, many relatives and friends reside there.  I care about what is happening in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, etc; but I have a special interest regarding the state of Delaware.

During this politically fueled time of year when special interests are viewed negatively, the Bible speaks of a special interest that we are to include in our Christian lives.  James 1:27 says this, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

Christians are definitely to show love to their neighbor, but there is a special interest placed on widows and orphans.  We are to care about them with even more regard.  If our desire is to please our Father, which it should be, then each of us must look at ourselves.

Are you caring for widows and orphans?  Maybe it has never crossed your mind before.  Take time to pray about how you can care for those God says are of special interest to Him and are to be of special interest to His people.
