Pastor’s Pen: Just living the dream

I was thinking ahead to some things I would like to have one day. A dishwasher … a house of my own … a house with a garage … a yard … a tub that isn’t stained up plastic … the ability to paint rooms in any color.

We all have dreams and things we wish for. God put that within us – a longing and desire for something more … for something better.

Those who have gone before us had dreams as well. Hebrews 11, long called the “Hall of Faith”, is full of people who were looking for something more than they had. They knew this wasn’t it. Hebrews 11:13, 16 says, “They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. … Instead, they were longing for a better country – a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God …”

Did you see the last part? “Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God…” God was pleased that they were looking for something better and living as though it was definitely going to happen.

When I first moved into my apartment I was certain I wouldn’t be there long. I would be out and into a better place. I didn’t even throw out the boxes I had used to carry everything in. I was that certain. But within only two years the boxes were thrown out or given to others to use. The thought that I would move on became more of a lofty dream than a certainty.

As you look at your life with Christ, there are two ways to live:

1. You could live like the new heaven and earth are nothing but a lofty dream. A hope that seems so distant it no longer generates any excitement.

Or …

2. You could live as one certain of a home in a new and better country. You live with faith that recognizes the King of that perfect land may victoriously return at any time to have you join Him in that place.

Which way do you live?

Live the dream.
