Pastor’s Pen: Guide needed
As I do a little more fishing this summer, I’m trying to learn how people catch fish in different situations. Sometimes it’s by simply casting and reeling in a lure. Sometimes it’s with a bobber that sits out there until it goes under. Sometimes, and this is my favorite thus far, it’s by trolling for that big fish to attack your line.
But there are other little things that I haven’t figured out. I’ve fished in small lakes and ponds, but the river continues to elude me…or should I say the fish in the river have eluded me. I’ve attempted to fish there, but haven’t gotten the right weight or bait or something. I did finally find some fish because they ate my bait and I did catch a crawfish, though that wasn’t what I going after. I need some help, a guide, to help me out.
The same issue comes when we want to live a pure life before God. When I struggle or see teens that are struggling with following God I ask this question, “Are you having your God & I time?” Basically, “Are you spending time in God’s Word and prayer each day?” It seems that almost without fail the answer is “No”.
I’ll put my Bible to the side when I have schedule changes or I’m in a rush, but then temptation comes and I give in so easily. Psalm 119:9-11 says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your Word. I seek You with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands. I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I may not sin against You.”
If you are struggling with following God then spend some time with Him. He will “guide you in the paths of righteousness”. (Psalm 23:3).
