Pastor's Pen: For His pleasure

“Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him.” (Psalm 115:3)

That seems wrong – someone doing whatever pleases them. But that’s life. As children, our parents do what pleases them. We go to school and our teachers do what pleases them. We eventually get jobs and our employers do what pleases them. We all have those above us who do whatever pleases them and we have to keep them happy. We may not always like it, but that’s the way it is. They are in charge so they get to do what they want … as long as it pleases the people above them. The floor manager must please the supervisor who must please the district manager who must please … you get the idea. The one in charge does as he pleases and those below must live or work to please the one who is in charge.

God, however, is above all. He has no one above Him. He can, therefore, do “whatever pleases Him” and no one can tell Him otherwise. There is no one over Him that He has to please. He is all-powerful and He is in charge. He doesn’t need to listen to us or accommodate us. We are literally like grass, here today and gone tomorrow, but God has always been and always will be (Psalm 90:2, 1 Peter 1:24). Nothing and no one surpasses Him.

And, honestly, would you want a God who HAD to listen to you and do what you wanted? If God has to do what you want Him to do then He is powerless and is no longer God at all. He may be your slave, your genie or your employee; but He is definitely not your God. If He must obey you the He would be submissive to you and have no true power to save anyone because someone could always command Him to do otherwise. You would then be the boss or “god.”

But He isn’t submissive to you. He isn’t required to be there every time you cry out. He doesn’t need to obey your every whim … because He IS GOD. And all the glory; all the honor belong to Him alone.

The question isn’t whether God is pleasing you, but are you pleasing Him? Are you giving Him the honor and glory that rightfully belong to Him? Be watchful that your life is honoring to God because there is no higher court of appeals. He is the final judge and everything and everyone must please Him alone.
