PASTOR'S PEN: Following the evidence
I enjoy watching crime solving shows like Law & Order, Criminal Minds and CSI. It’s amazing to me that any criminal can come up with a plan to escape detection after viewing all of the resources available. During each show the detectives investigate the scene, return with evidence and evaluate it in the lab. They discover where a clump of dirt originated by its make-up, whether it was a male or female by their DNA, what type of clothes they wore by a piece of string and their identity by the fingerprints left behind.
God has left evidence behind as well. The Bible tells us that “God’s invisible qualities — His eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made…” (Romans 1:20). And Psalm 8 shines a light on God’s work when it gives full credit to Him for creation, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place...” (Psalm 8:3, emphasis added). God makes it obvious from the detail of DNA to the beauty of a mountain range to the vastness of the universe that there must have been an Inventor-Creator-Designer behind it all.
Take time today to just enjoy nature. Listen to its sounds, bask in its beauty, be impressed by its detail and amazed by its enormity. Then ask yourself, “What does the evidence reveal?” Your answer to that question will either lead you toward God or away from Him. How do you respond?
