If you light a match and just hold it, one of two things will happen: It will either burn out quickly, and probably burn your finger, or it will be blown out by a slight breeze. I remember several times trying to light a barbecue, camp fire or t-shirt (that’s another story) while there was a breeze in the air. The match kept going out time and time again. It was VERY frustrating.

That same thing can happen with 'friends.'  There are so-called friends that will be there through the good times, the fun and the easy-going life-style; but when you get in trouble, some rumors start to spread or there is work to be done; they are nowhere to be found.

Proverbs 18:24 talks about this when it says, "One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother."

When you look at your friends, do they stick by you through thick and thin or are they hard to find when the going gets tough? If you surround yourself with only friends who are there for the party but gone for the clean-up, you will soon come to ruin.

Perhaps, even more importantly, what type of friend are you? Do you last a long time like a well fueled furnace or are you like a match that is quickly snuffed out at the slightest hint of difficulty? Loyal friends are rare. Be a loyal friend and find loyal friends. It will be a fortress that no disaster can tear down.
