PASTOR'S PEN: A new representative
Last week I discovered one of the consequences of sin in this world – poison ivy. I was out fishing and decided to do a little exploring on the shore across the lake. Little did I know that my short excursion would result in days – and possibly weeks – of an itchy rash on my arms, side, and, worst of all, between my fingers. It’s times like this I wish I could travel back in time and show Adam the red bumps on my skin and say, “Look at all the trouble you caused! How did you ever become my representative?”
The truth is that Adam was our representative. His decisions were made on behalf of all humanity. Whatever Adam did, it was as if you or I were doing it. He stood in my place in that garden and made a decision on my behalf that would result in sin for everyone in every generation after him. Romans 5:12 says this, “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.”
I could only think that if Adam, my representative, made such a terrible decision with a never-ending consequence then I seriously would like to fire him. You would never keep an employee who made decisions that totally ruined your business. I want a representative who will make better decisions for me … and then a man requesting to fill that position walks in, the God-man, Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ has offered to be my representative. He won’t only make good decisions for me now, but will take care of the worst of consequences from Adam’s bad decision. Paul continues in Romans with this statement, “…if the many died by the trespass of one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! … the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.”
There is a new representative! Jesus Christ is willing to represent you – if you will only receive His gift then you will see “God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness.” Now is the time to trade that old representative for a new one. No, it won’t eliminate your poison ivy – or whatever else you may have because of a fallen world – but it will result in no eternal punishment, an abundant life now and forever, and a confidence that no matter what happens you have the perfect representative to make decisions on your behalf. What are you waiting for? Make the trade today.
