Annual Tiara Fun Walk set for Saturday, June 3
REED CITY — Community members will walk and run to raise funds for Reed City area students on Saturday, June 3.
For the past five years, the Reed City General Federation of Women's Club organized and hosted the Tiara Fun Walk. The walk benefits Katie's Kloset, an organization which donates supplies to elementary school children in need.
"We helped over 80 children this last school year, whether students need T-shirts, socks, tennis shoes or coats," said Shelly Scharlow, GFWC member. "When teachers see a need, they contact us and we go shopping.
"The walk is really a rewarding thing. It's dear to my heart because it's named after my daughter, Katie, who passed away from cancer."
Katie was a member of the Reed City chapter and one of her main goals was to help provide for children in need, according to the club's Facebook page. In honor of her memory, the Katie's Kloset organization and the Tiara Fun Walk began.
The outreach began small, with purchasing winter clothes for recess, said Reed City chapter President Jessica Windquist. The organization has grown and can provide more school supplies.
"We even were able to help a few families who had their houses burn down and provided children with a couple of outfits and pajamas to help get them through," Windquist said.
Registration for the walk begins at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m. at the Reed City Depot. For more information, contact Scharlow at (231) 832-3178.
