Have we become so familiar with some habits, relationships, or accepting questionable ways of life? Familiarities sometimes comfort us to a point which may lead to a lifestyle that can actually control us! There are so many things available to us today. Things actually misleading us into feeling more attractive, by what we wear, the style of our hair, cars we drive, our homes. The ever increasing availability of drugs (alcohol included) that promise to comfort us. Sadly these alternatives are only temporary, sometimes causing a deeper dependence, leading us to wanting more and more trying to fill a void in our lives. Jesus warns us about the devil and his deceitful ways, found in the John 10:10: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” We should pay special attention to the word ‘may.’ It is giving us permission to live an abundant life guided by the Holy Spirit. All we have to do is to submit and believe in those Words of Jesus. Then rebuking the devil, with his lies, attempting to control us, and resist him using the Name of Jesus! Satan knows that Jesus has defeated him and he has no power under that Name. We often don’t think about the hammer and the nails used in the crucifixion of Jesus! We are responsible for the hammer needed to drive those nails, that represent our sins, being driven into the flesh of Jesus, releasing His Blood that cleanses us! We can not say for sure about the use of a hammer and nails in the earlier life of Jesus as He practiced the carpenter’s trade, using them in securing materials together. If so, He would have been very familiar with them on a smaller scale. In a sense, those things that He had become so familiar with were used to hold Him to that cross! The only power the devil has is when we begin believing his lies and temptations! Let’s become so familiar with and reliant upon every Word of God available to us. Remember when Jesus was tempted by the devil He spoke the Scriptures so familiar to Him that the devil was defeated. Let us become so familiar with God’s Promises, His Word, and then with every attack of the devil, we can remind him that we are given the Name of Jesus, the abundant life, not living a life of fear. 1 John 4:4: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Let’s focus and be aware of anything in our lives that could become familiar, actually causing us to be separated from that abundant life Jesus has provided! — Ron Witbeck is an associate pastor at Resurrection Life Church in Big Rapids.
