Acouple thoughts for you to ponder. First, there is no doubt about it, campaign season has already started. Second ... Oh. My. God!!!!! We have 18 months to suffer through a bunch of people making fools of themselves, and then decide which of the clowns will best lead this nation ... and the free world! Hey! Don’t misunderstand. It’s great stuff for me. Campaign season is for a columnist like myself, what Christmas is to a pastor or priest. Way too easy! At Christmastime, pastors looking for a sermon topic don’t need to be waffling around on the dark side of the prophet Nahum. The sermon basically writes itself. During a busy campaign season such as this is shaping up to be, I only need to wait for Monday’s news to see who has said what stupid thing, and then wonder - “Is this the best we can do???” To wit, Dr. Ben Carson. Carson recently announced his candidacy to be the GOP choice to run in 2016. He is quite a popular figure. Quite a charmer. I can only say, “Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!” This guy is already making Sarah Palin look like a well-honed, finely-tuned political maven. There’s no doubt Carson is intelligent. He is, after all, a neurosurgeon. But being intelligent doesn’t guarantee you’re smart. Carson ain’t. This guys has said some really stupid things, and one has to wonder if he believes the stuff emanating from his pie-hole. For example ... Carson famously suggested prison rape proved - beyond a shadow of a doubt - that homosexuality was a matter of lifestyle choice. “A lot of people who go into prison ...go into prison straight ...a nd when they come out, they’re gay,” Carson noted during a CNN interview a while back. “So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.” Now, that may well be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. And he is a medical doctor! Of course, Carson immediately blamed the left-leaning media for taking his words out of context. Then, to cover his kiester, he announced he would not discuss same-sex anything ever again! Whatever. Carson doesn’t just need a single topic to set himself out as a ... um ... er ... character. During the Values Voters Summit last year, he claimed President Obama’s healthcare reforms would be remembered as one of the worst thing to stain this nation since ...well, read for yourself: “ObamaCare is the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery,” he said. “ In a way, it is slavery, because it is making all of us subservient to the government.” Then, of course, there was Carson warning the country - via FOX News - that the Obama administration planned on canceling the 2016 elections so Obama could continue to be president-dictator! “Certainly there’s the potential because you have to recognize that we have a rapidly increasing national debt, a very unstable financial foundation, and you have all these things going on like the ISIS crisis that could very rapidly change things that are going on in our nation. And unless we begin to deal with these things in a comprehensive way and in a logical way, there is no telling what could happen in just a couple of years.” Then Carson took a stand against the Advanced Placement curriculum, specifically the history part of AP. He claimed kids studying such a curriculum would learn all about civil disobedience and would scurry out to join terror organizations. “I think most people when they finish that course, they’d be ready to go sign up for ISIS,” said Carson. A slight stretch of the imagination. Carson also has a fascination with history and Nazi Germany. First, in early 2014, he compared Democrats to Nazis saying, “There comes a time when people with values simply have to stand up. Think about Nazi Germany. Most of those people did not believe in what Hitler was doing. But did they speak up? Did they stand up for what they believe in? They did not, and you saw what happened.” Then he suggested liberals had turned this country into something not dissimilar to Nazi Germany. “I mean, America is very much like Nazi Germany. And I know you’re not supposed to say ‘Nazi Germany,’ but I don’t care about political correctness. You know, you had a government using its tools to intimidate the population. We now live in a society where people are afraid to say what they actually believe.” Sigh. Then he had to take on the president’s appearance. When it was noted Pres. Obama always was well turned out and dressed well, Carson countered with “Like most psychopaths. That’s why they’re successful. That’s the way they look. They all look great.” Campaign season has just begun. There’s much more to come.
