The duplicity of some neo-conservatives in this country is simply amazing. Amazing. With the mess in Iraq escalating and turning uglier every day, the Obama administration struggles to get a grip on things. They are not (Yes! I said it!) dealing with the situation very well. BUT ... To blame them and them alone is a bit of a stretch. A HUGE stretch. Yet that is exactly what hard-line neo-cons are trying to do, with the ever so enthusiastic support of FOX News. Suddenly, the Iraq war, in all its complexity, is Obama's war! He is at fault. It is his policy that has allowed this mess to develop. They - the neo-cons - don't even try to whitewash the reality of their own responsibility for the Iraq war. They simply ignore the truth completely. President George Bush's chief liar, Dick Cheney, recently wrote a piece for the Wall Street Journal that is absolutely astonishing. "Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many," he wrote with his daughter in a co-authored opinion. "Too many times to count, Mr. Obama has told us he is 'ending' the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - as though wishing made it so. His rhetoric has now come crashing into reality. "Mr. Obama had only to negotiate an agreement to leave behind some residual American forces, training and intelligence capabilities to help secure the peace. "Instead, he abandoned Iraq and we are watching American defeat snatched from the jaws of victory." What Cheney, and others from his former administration's team fail to make note of is the fact that it was his own boss, George Bush, and the Bush administration team who set today's situation in Iraq in motion. Already back in 2008, Pres. George W. Bush signed an agreement with the government of Iraq that laid out the plan for an eventual withdrawal of American troops. Bush signed it. Not Obama. Buuuuuuuuuuut ... Cheney was never one to tell the whole story, and especially not the true story. He and his team of liars managed to manipulate the truth so well that thousands of young Americans died eliminating nonexistent weapons of mass destruction and bringing mythical democracy to Iraq. No weapons. No democracy. Yet Cheney has the gall to blame Obama!!??!! Look. The U.S.-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement, or as it was officially labeled, Agreement Between the United States of America and the Republic of Iraq On the Withdrawal of United States Forces from Iraq and the Organization of Their Activities during Their Temporary Presence in Iraq, was signed by Pres. Bush and Iraqi Pres. Nuri el Maliki in 2008. The document was a "status of forces" arrangement that set the tone for not only the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from major Iraqi cities by June, 2009, but also set a date for the complete withdrawal of troops by Dec. 31, 2011. I'll write it slowly so that you can read it slowly. George Bush ... signed the agreement ... that determined ... the complete ... withdrawal of U.S. troops ... by December, 2011. At a joint press conference, Bush praised the agreement. (That was the press conference during which some nut threw a couple shoes at the president. Remember?) During the press conference, Bush said "The Security Agreement addresses our presence, activities, and withdrawal from Iraq. Two years ago, this day seemed unlikely - but the success of the surge and the courage of the Iraqi people set the conditions for these two agreements to be negotiated and approved by the Iraqi parliament." It was in October of 2011 that the Obama administration began the fulfillment of the Bush brokered agreement. Bush cut the deal leaving Obama to iron out the wrinkles and bring the withdrawal to fruition. So ... when he does so, when Obama respects the Bush arrangements, suddenly HE is the bad guy!!??!! Cheney blames Obama for the mess his own band of merry neo-cons created. It is simply astonishing. Why does Cheney even still have a forum? He is a liar and a manipulator. He and his buddies were wrong about Iraq then, and they are wrong about pointing fingers today. If Cheney had any pride or honor whatsoever, he would slither back to Jackson Hole and live out his days in in-house exile. "Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many," he wrote. Really!!??!! How can this man sleep with the burden of so many American lives weighing so heavily on his conscience? Amazing.
