Pastor's Pen: The trump cards we hold in life

When I was in college many late nights were spent playing Rook.

Rook is a card game similar to Euchre. The object is to take the “trick,” the cards laid down during each round. One easy way to do that is to lay down a “trump card.” A trump card is a card that outranks all of the other cards, with the rook card being the highest trump card in the game. It’s always a good game when you have a handful of trump cards, including the rook card.

In life we set certain “trump” cards. There are always opinions and directions that outrank all others. For example, if I have a problem with my computer and Mark, a friend who uses computers says, “I think the issue is the touchpad.” I may look that over. But if Justin, someone who went to college for computers and works on them for a living, looks at it and says that the issue is the software then his opinion will ‘trump’ Mark’s opinion. I’ll listen to Justin first in regard to computers.

God also has an opinion. He has an opinion on how to live. God, the Creator of life and Ruler of the Universe, has an opinion that is to trump all other opinions. Proverbs 3:5-6 says this: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your path straight.”

You can listen to the opinions of others and even have your own opinion, but if in any way they differ from God’s opinion; God outranks them all. Does God’s opinion trump all others in the way you live your life?
