Pastor’s Pen: Download Jesus

The last time I wrote I used the description of a popular app.  From kids to adults Pokemon Go! has swept the nation and the world.  People walk all over using their phones to find creatures hidden in virtual reality.

I was talking with some students the other week about this favorite app.  I asked them, “If I walked around town with my phone looking for these fabled figures but didn’t have the Pokemon Go! app on my phone would I find them?”  The overwhelming answer is “No!”.  One can wander all over with their phone in hand and look the part of a Pokemon explorer, but unless they download the app, that person will never find what they are searching for.

This is the same in the spiritual world.  I know many people that ‘look the part’ of a Christian.  They go around serving others, giving to good causes and helping those in need.  They are generous and kind and easy to be around.  Yet some of these same people do not know Christ as their personal Savior.  Hebrews 11:6 tells us,

“And without faith it is impossible to please God…”  One can do all those things, but without the right faith they will never satisfy God at all.  We’re told that it is impossible without faith.

“But”, you say, “I have faith”.  We all have faith in something, but in what does God want our faith to be placed?  I can carry my phone around believing I will find a Pokemon.  I can have great faith that I will find one, but without the app my faith if pointless.  The same is true with God.  Our faith must be in the right thing or person.

The author of Hebrews tells us where our faith must lie, “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus…” (Hebrews 10:19).  The author is talking to believers – believers in what?  They’re belief was in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for sins.  I can only enter into the presence of God if my faith is in Jesus Christ.  I can walk around serving others, enter a church gathering, listen to a sermon and even pray; but if I have not downloaded Jesus into my life through faith none of it matters.  Just like I have no hope of getting Pokemon without the app; I have no hope of being right before God without Jesus.

The question for you and for I is this, “Where is your faith?”  Is it in something that sounds good, but will not result in the goal of eternal life with God or is it in Jesus Christ, “the way, the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Him”.  (John 14:6)  Put your faith in Jesus, the only way to God the Father.
