Pastor’s Pen: Be called wise

I find the various responses of kids to discipline amazing. Some kids if you look at them in a way that shows you are not pleased with their actions, they almost come to tears. Others could walk into a wall and they would still keep doing the same thing over and over no matter how much it hurt.

That doesn’t seem to change as adults. It’s easy for us to be too proud to accept wise advice or rebuke. We think we have it altogether and the other person is being petty. Let’s look at a few Proverbs on the subject:

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.” (12:1)

“… he who regards reproof is prudent.” (15:5)

“ If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.” (15:32)

“Heed instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.” (8:33)

“He who listens to life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise.” (15:31)

Rather than stubbornly thinking you have all the answers, listen carefully to the instruction and correction of others so you may be called wise.
