JIM CREES: Truth telling in an election year

As we move deeper into the 2016 election season, there seems to be a growing problem with folks on the campaign trail telling the truth.

There’s a lot of ... er ... fibbing out there.

I don’t know why this is necessarily so, except that not being entirely truthful - about anything - seems to carry with it some advantage in the political world.

Too bad.

I try to be truthful. There certainly are a lot of folks reading my columns who don’t agree with me - and for plenty of reasons. But I don’t lie. I hold my convictions honestly, and expect (or hope) that even those who disagree with me hold their opinions honestly as well.

I can disagree with you and you can disagree with me. But let’s disagree civilly and honestly.

A while back I wrote:

“I grew up surrounded by truth sayers and promise keepers.

“I won’t apologize for the fact that I grew up in an environment in which personal integrity was important, where decency was emphasized, where lying was a major sin, where honesty was all encompassing, and in which business practices were reflective of the values encouraged in church and at home.

“My father, my pastor, my Sunday School teacher, most of the people I worked for as a young person and the many friends of my family were truth sayers and promise keepers.

“It may sound weird, but I can’t recall ever being lied to by any of these people. I can’t recall ever being deceived or disappointed by them in word or deed.”

One of my favorite portions of the Bible is the teaching by Jesus when He said:

“But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” Matt. 5:32-37

Let your Yea be yea ...

Just tell the truth.

And then there are candidates for the highest office in the land.

We have a lot of fibbers out there - both Democrats and Republicans.

Hillary fudges on the truth, and Donald doesn’t exactly pass the lie detector test either!

But the champion of the election season liars (at least for the time being) is ... drum roll please ...

The political watchdog organization Politifact tracks the accuracy of political statements and campaign promises by ALL candidates and compiles data regarding the true-and-false ratios. Cruz racks up an incredible record of 56 percent inaccuracy, stretches of the truth and downright lies.

Fifty-six percent of what he says is simply false.

Look, Hillary Clinton has a truth problem. Heck, only 2 percent of potential voters believe she told the truth about her emails and the Benghazi issue.

But, Cruz!!! Wow!

Last September Cruz said the Iran deal “trusts the Iranians to inspect themselves.”

Just recently, with regard to immigration and the Mexican border, he claimed: “Existing law right now requires 700 miles of double-layered border fencing on the Mexico border.”

He claimed, “The Democrats in the Senate last year introduced a constitutional amendment to repeal the free speech protections of the First Amendment.”

Worrying about immigration from the Middle East he said, “One of the most troubling aspects of the Rubio-Schumer Gang of Eight bill was that it gave President Obama blanket authority to admit refugees, including Syrian refugees, without mandating any background checks whatsoever.”

Then he added, “The head of the FBI has told Congress they cannot vet those (Syrian) refugees.”

Sticking with the Middle East theme Cruz claimed President Obama “ ... will not utter the words ‘radical Islamic terrorism’ and as matter of policy, nobody in the administration will say the words ‘radical Islamic terrorism.’”

Then he suggested: “Mike Morell (former director of the Central Intelligence) testified and told Congress that the reason Obama has not bombed ISIS’ oil fields is they’re concerned about global warming.”

On more domestic issues, Cruz has suggested the “... federal government is going after school districts, trying to force them to let boys shower with little girls.”

Wow! False.

Late last year he pointed out, “Under Barack Obama and the big government economy, the median wage for women has dropped $733.”

And then, of course, he claimed, “Here’s the simple and undeniable fact: The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.”

Seriously!!??! Um ... false.

Look. Cruz is not a big friend of the truth.

You can certainly disagree with me, but HIS record stands on its own.
