JIM CREES: Measles from faraway lands
Whoosh! I, for one, am relieved. We finally got this measles thing all figured out for us.
For a while, there was all sort of debate swirling around concerning vaccinations versus no vaccinations.
There was all kinds of talk about vaccines — pro and con. Some scientific discussion. Some reasonable debate and concern. Some simply silly suggestions.
A lot of good, well meaning folks logged in on both sides of the debate.
But we can now stop, settle down, and wrap up the vaccination arguments since the REAL reason for the measles outbreak has been revealed.
By a congressman. From Alabama.
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala) has fielded a new idea as to the source of the scourge.
The recent spread of measles around the nation is because of ... Drum roll, please maestro!
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Yessir.
In a news report posted in Western Journalism, (hardly a liberal rag!), Brooks, asserted Tuesday the recent measles outbreak could well be the fault of Pres. Barack Obama’s lousy immigration policy.
“I don’t think there is any healthcare professional who has examined the facts who could honestly say that Americans have not died because the disease is brought into America by illegal aliens who are not properly healthcare screened as lawful immigrants are,” WJ reports Brooks as telling radio program host Matt Murphy last week.
“It might be the Enterovirus that has a heavy presence in Central and South America that has caused deaths of American children over the past six to nine months. It might be this measles outbreak… there are any number of things.”
Is there nothing this president hasn’t done wrong? Now he’s allowing measles to enter the county because of shoddy immigration policy.
See? The whole measles/health situation has nothing to do with vaccinations or the lack thereof.
It’s all about immigration!
Every bit of research being frantically carried out at this time points to the spread of measles being solely and wholly a result of a lack of an inconsistent vaccination program against the disease.
The spread of measles has nothing to do with immigrants, but everything to do with the philosophical decisions made by some parents — right or wrong.
In fact. the most rapid spread of measles is in enclaves in which live a high number of parents who believe more in Jenny McCarthy than they do in scientists, doctors, and public health officials.Whatever.
Truth be known, as opposed to Rep. Brooks ridiculous ramblings, information from the World Health Organization shows that “... the following countries have higher vaccination rates for measles than the United States’ rate of 92 percent: Mexico (99 percent), Nicaragua (99 percent), Panama (98 percent), Belize (96 percent), Guatemala (93 percent), Honduras (93 percent), and El Salvador (93 percent).
“In fact, most countries in Central and South America have higher rates of measles vaccination than does the United States. In all, some 108 countries have higher measles vaccination rates than the United States.”
To wit, there is more statistical danger of a contagion from an American kid than from kids in Mexico or Guatemala!
But heck, scientific data hasn’t stopped people like Brooks from suggesting and insinuating that immigrants are risks to both public health and the commonweal.
C’mon. This is a man living so utterly in fear of immigrants — legal or otherwise — that he told constituents:
“I wanted to ensure people that I have an intensity on this subject that we have to address the illegal alien issue. They have no right to be here. They are clogging up our emergency rooms, and making our education system more expensive. If you go to the Madison County Jail, there are far too many illegal aliens there because they have victimized Americans.”
Are “they” “clogging up our emergency rooms?” Um ... no.
Are “they” “... making our education system more expensive?” Er ... no.
Are “they” plugging up the jails because they have “victimized Americans?” Nope again.
The actual numbers do not support Brooks’s claims, or similar claims by others of his ilk.
And yet he gets supporters giggly excited when he says that in order to fight the supposed continuing waves of illegal immigration:
“As your congressman on the house floor, I will do anything short of shooting them ...”
How very, very sad that this is the kind of guy we have in Congress, but ... it is what it is.
Still, despite the silliness of guys like Brooks, it’s important to keep in mind that more kids have gotten measles because of the silly decision making process of rich folks in places like Marin County, California, than will EVER get measles from an immigrant kid — who odds are has already be properly vaccinated in his or her “third world” country.
