JIM CREES: Just makes you wonder

I’ve written about this before, but here I am again.

Do you remember back in 2003, just prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, when Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines was fronting for her trio in London as part of a European tour?

During the concert, Maines said “We don’t want this war, this violence and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”

She was referring, of course, to President George W. Bush.

The response was immediate and pretty devastating.

The country music world went bonkers.

Politicians screamed bloody murder.

The furor continued for months, resulting in canceled concerts and contracts, bag loads of hate mail, and death threats too numerable to count.

There were even huge gatherings at which CDs and tapes of the Dixie Chicks’ music were destroyed with great patriotic glee.

Arguably the most memorable comment tossed their way during the brouhaha that followed Maines’ comments in London was the now famous:

“Shut up and sing, bitch.”

Some would argue the furor ruined the Dixie Chicks collective careers as country-western singers, (although they did recreate themselves and continued on to log success after success.)

They were “ruined” because one singer said, “... we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”

And then ...

There’s Ted Nugent.

Nugent keeps popping off with his moronic ramblings, but because he espouses causes nearer and dearer the hearts of “real Americans” they simply forgive (or ignore) the incredible stuff he continually spouts.

No indignation. No embarrassment. No outcry.

Just stunning hypocrisy.

Recently, Nugent was campaigning for Texas Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott and was attending a gun show when he said:

“I have obviously failed to galvanize and prod, if not shame, enough Americans to be ever vigilant not to let a Chicago Communist-raised, Communist-educated, Communist-nurtured subhuman mongrel like the ACORN community organizer gangster Barack Hussein Obama to weasel his way into the top office of authority in the United States of America.”

Really? Mongrel???

Is this an infantile dig at Obama’s white mother and black father?

Please, Ted. Please.

And all the rest of his bulls**t, including “weasel his way into the White House ...”??

C’mon, Ted. Obama won the election. HE WON. Your guy, and your team, lost.

Still, just because the GOP lost DOES NOT mean they’re losers. Nugent, however, IS a loser, and any politician who thinks they need the support of a loser of his caliber is just offering up a sorry example of political pandering.

Still, they line up for his support — even when he calls Democrats and the President of the United States coyotes and varmints who deserve to die.

Or when he tweets:

“Pimps whores & welfare brats & their soulless supporters have a president to destroy America”

Or when he previously announced the president was a “ subhuman varmint.”

But, good God-fearing Republicans continue to beg for Ted’s support and approval, including Mike Huckabee, an ordained pastor who just loves playing “Cat Scratch Fever” with Nugent, despite the fact that the lyrics are less than, ... er, ... um, ... Christ-like.

Too many Republicans and good God-fearing Americans love Ted. Just love him.

‘Cause he likes guns and eats venison.

Golly, back in the early 1990s he thrilled his “faithful” by calling Heidi Prescott, then director of the Fund for Animals, a “worthless whore” and a “shallow slut.”

And yet, ... he’s not exactly a pillar of decency, certainly not for the sanctity of marriage crowd.

Nugent has fathered at least two children who he conveniently bailed on back in the day.

Then, of course, there is the classic Nugent-esque example of making the world fit his needs.

When he was 30, Nugent was involved in a relationship with an underage girl. Since she was a minor (but oddly with her parents blessing), he had himself made her legal guardian in order to be able to legally cohabitate with her.

Pretty, ... um, ... questionable. A legal guardian having a ...um ...“relationship” with his underage ward?

But, heck. It’s OK. Nugent likes guns.

That’s why some GOP candidates feel they simply must have the support of a guy who calls the President of the United States a “subhuman mongrel.”

And let me be crystal clear folks, it’s not just an Obama issue. It is an issue of basic respect for the presidency, and basic respect for another human being — even if you disagree with him or her.

It’s all about decency and respect — neither of which Nugent has for, ... anyone really.

Still, folks love him.

Heck, let’s not fool ourselves. We don’t need to travel to Texas to witness misguided Nugent worship.

The guy who called the President of the United States a “varmint” who needed to be shot, the guys who said, “Obama, he’s a piece of s**t. I told him to suck on my machine gun,” and the guy who called the president of the United States a “subhuman mongrel” is still an honorary member (a “special deputy sheriff”) of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

Makes you wonder.
