JIM CREES: A blessing or a sin?
I really feel sorry for the problem some in the evangelical world are having in trying to figure out how to work with Mitt Romney.
It’s gotta be painful.
But, consider the option. If some of the evangelical leadership world don’t go with Mitt, they’ll need to support a Nigerian Muslim already dragging this country down into Socialism.
So ...they support Mitt. Unfortunately, in doing so they also expose themselves as pretty serious hypocrites, or “blind guides.” (Matt. 23.)
A few days ago, Mitt made a pilgrimage to visit Billy Graham.
Billy Graham virtually, (almost, but not quite), gave his imprimatur to Romney. He didn’t quite say “This is my man ...” but almost.
“It was a privilege to pray with Gov. Romney, for his family, and our country,” said the Rev. Graham in a statement. “I hope millions of Americans will join me in praying for our nation and to vote for candidates who still support the biblical definition of marriage, protect the sanctity of life, and defend our religious freedoms.”
Graham didn’t bother bringing up Mitt’s Mormon faith, although he did say he had “values and strong moral convictions.”
Luckily, the good reverend didn’t reference his own website, that of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, in which it is noted that Mormonism is a “cult.”
The Mormons, Graham’s team suggest, teach “doctrines or beliefs that deviate from the biblical message of the Christian faith.”
Ouch. Serious stuff.
Who would want a heretic teaching things that “deviate from the biblical message of the Christian faith” living in the White House?
Graham’s son Franklin said flat out that Romney wasn’t a Christian. But, once again, considering it’s him or Obama, I guess they’ll stick with the Mormon.
Now, it’s not only the Grahams who are having a tough time with Mitt.
Dr. Richard Sand, one of the top shelf leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention said he not only doesn’t consider Mitt a Christian but he said that at a very basic level, Mormonism and Islam were the same thing.
“Perhaps the best way to describe Mormonism, perhaps the most charitable way to describe Mormonism, is that it’s a fourth Abrahamic religion, with Joseph Smith playing the role that Mohammed plays in Islam, and the Book of Mormon playing the role that the Quran plays in Islam,” Sand said.
“Islam is not a Christian faith. Mormonism is not a Christian faith.”
It’s confusing. To hear and read the Christian leadership, it’s hard to think how they could possibly support Mitt.
“While it is true that the United States of America was founded on the sacred principle of religious freedom for all, that liberty was never intended to exalt other religions to the level that Christianity holds in our country’s heritage. Our Founders expected that Christianity – and no other religion – would receive support from the government ...” – Family Research Council.
And they themselves declare Mormonism as “not a Christian faith.”
And then ...
“This is God’s world, not Satan’s. Christians are the lawful heirs, not non-Christians.” - Gary North, Political Polytheism: The Myth of Pluralism
So now they espouse a non-Christian, (their words, not mine), for the White House???
“If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.” - Jerry Falwell
So if 1) Mitt is a Mormon, added to 2) Dr. Sands’ “Mormonism is not a Christian faith.” than this would most logically equal 3) Falwell’s “If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.”
Why, for the love of Pete, would I want to vote for a “failure as a human being” to be president?
Then you have poor Rev. Mike Huckabee.
He came out and endorsed Romney saying, “I’ll do everything that I can to vigorously support Mitt Romney ...I believe his leadership would provide the right direction ...”
This comes on the tail of an entire website - www.Pastors4Huckabee.com - on which “The biblical case against voting for a Mormon for president” is made in Huckabee’s favor, while pointing out “Why Christians who support Romney actually violate Scripture.”
To wit, by endorsing Romney, Huckabee condemns himself to perdition.
Ya gotta feel sorry for these folks. They strive for Heaven, but by their own account end up sliding to Gehenna by supporting a non-Christian.
Actually, the situation is historically fascinating.
Although it hasn’t been specifically noted, according to the convoluted commentary of many evangelical pundits this is the first election cycle testing one non-Christian (a Mormon) against another non-Christian (a Muslim.)
Luckily though, the endorsement balance has been tipped heavily in favor of Mitt.
This past week, Romney received the enthusiastic endorsement of which both candidates were probably dreaming.
Lindsey Lohan told the world she would be voting for Mitt.
Wow! Billy Graham and Lindsey Lohan in one week. Could a politician ask for anything more?
